The intersection of spirituality, trauma, and loss.
Reconstructing sincere faith without white nationalism, anti-intellectualism, or homophobia.
Spiritual formation.
Leadership.
Anything that helps people live with full souls, active minds, and light hearts.
Speaking, Workshops and Retreats.
In addition to writing and working as a therapist, Matthew enjoys teaching and facilitating. His speaking/retreat topics include:
Reconstructing Faith: Building a spiritual vibrant, intellectually honest, and socially inclusive faith.
Spiritual Formation: active practices for actual transformation.
Things we Can’t Repair: a no-easy answer conversation about faith, loss, and trauma.
Band of Brothers: Authenticity and growth (AKA, not your dad’s men's retreat).
Psychology for Non-Psychology Professionals: applicable psychological insights and interventions for educators, ministry staff, and other helping professionals.
Matthew was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest.
Though he shared a womb with his twin brother Seth, the two grew up separated by a traumatic injury, a river, and the walls of a specialized hospital unit Seth called home. The story of Matthew and Seth’s relationship became the memoir, Forgotten Twin.
Matthew attended college at George Fox University in Oregon. After college, Matthew worked as an associate pastor while attending seminary. After leaving pastoral work, Matthew worked in higher education in central Kansas and then in Seattle, Washington before earning an additional master’s degree and becoming a psychotherapist.
Here are a few other things you should know about Matthew.
You can just call him Matt.
Matthew loves good books, good hikes, good conversations, and just about any cup of coffee
He plays guitar and bass and dabbles in a few other instruments.
He’s a Seahawks fan and a nostalgic fan of the NBA in the 90s.
Matthew holds three master’s degrees: an MBA, M.Div, and MA in Marriage and Family Therapy.
Matthew believes there are people and systems who will try to tell you someone else is your “enemy” because they don’t look like you, love like you, vote like you, or worship like you. He believes most of us have more in common with our supposed “enemies” than we do with the people and systems who profit from division and hate.
Matthew is a former pastor who still has a heart for the church. Though he will tell you he’s not always sure where his faith fits, he has always believed following Christ is his spiritual home.
Matthew runs his own private therapy practice. He works with individuals, couples, and adult family members. You can find out more about Matthew’s therapy practice here.
On most days, you can find Matthew Sullivan Cox somewhere in the Pacific Northwest, where he enjoys long hikes, short runs, black coffee, and making his wife and kids roll their eyes at Dad jokes and 90's movie quotes.
